The presentation, An introduction to Aerated and Static Compost Systems: how to choose appropriate options, and address cost considerations, "has been chosen to provide our attendees with relevant, up-to-date, interactive and – most importantly – useful information" by SWANA's seven Technical Divisions' Program Committees.

Over the last decade ECS has provided pro forma design, which includes process technology evaluation, for a broad range of proposed composting facilities. This range has encompassed tip rates from 1 to 1,000 tons per day, locations from desert to rainforest to the high mountains, and feedstocks from every normal source and a few there weren't. Our clients have included small and large municipalities, publicly held waste haulers, farmers, and large and small merchant facilities. The ECS pro forma design process has been developed to help client arrive at a best value solution. This process involves an in-depth exploration of the facts, a targeted technical evaluation, and a realistic business analysis. The outcomes of this process vary as widely as the compost facilities themselves.
This presentation will share the insights and tools ECS uses to provide focus from the wide range options available to today's compost facility developers. We will discuss how the pro forma design process develops the definition of an appropriate technology in consideration of budget, feedstock characteristics, location, operational cost basis, and product market requirements. This talk will introduce the audience to in-vessel and ASP compost systems along with their many many options including: aeration systems (reversing and single direction), control systems (automated and web-based), odor control systems and sources of odor, site configurations (mass bed, discrete piles, bunker walls, in-vessel) along with pros and cons of each.
The topics included will greatly assist those that are new to the compost industry that are trying to determine if their unique application or opportunity has the solid foundation for a sound business; It will also assist those currently in the compost industry that are trying to determine if a new process technology is appropriate (upgrading from windrow to in-vessel or ASP) and if so what type is appropriate. It will discuss feedstock quantification, volume calculations, compost process time (primary, secondary, curing), rule of thumb cost for different technology types, odor & leachate considerations, and cost/ton pro forma development.
